Forgiveness of Elderly Mothers by Middle-Aged Daughters

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the forgiveness of mothers by middle-aged daughters dealing with the issue of divorce and remarriage.

Methods: The researchers interviewed two women in their fifties who were living with their elderly mothers. The data were analyzed through open coding.

Results: The following were the participants¡¯ motives of forgiving their mothers: a) the same experience as mother: husband's affair, b) it was a voluntary activity, and c) study on counseling. The results of forgiveness were a) rediscovery and acceptance of mother, b) compassion for mother, c) recovery in mind, d) easing of physical symptom, e) open communication with mother, and f) remaining angry. The participants¡¯ motives for not forgiving were a) anger and resentment from ¡°son vs. daughter discrimination,¡± b) mother¡¯s selfishness, c) anger toward mother without apology, and d) mother's coldness during a troubled time. The results of not forgiving were: a) a clear mind, b) emotional and physical cutoff, c) regret regarding lack of intimacy with mother, and d) minimum support for mother.

Conclusions: Through this study, the forgiveness of daughters depended on the unique family situation and the dynamics of the mother-daughter relationship. The unique family situation along with the intention of forgiveness must be considered in family counseling and intervention.
