Experiences of Children in Their 20s Raised in Single Father Families

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study aimed to present a substantial theory on the adaptation process of children raised by single fathers.
Methods: The grounded theory method by Strauss and Corbin (1998) was used to analyze experiences of children in their 20s who had been raised in single father families.
Results: Through the analysis, 103 concepts, 40 subcategories, and 18 categories were produced. The central phenomenon was ¡°loss of the emotional safety zone.¡± The causal conditions were ¡°family cohesion before the loss,¡± and ¡°no prepared farewell.¡± Contextual conditions were ¡°change of daily life,¡± ¡°sociological perspectives on the single parent,¡± and ¡°change of family relationship in the early loss.¡± Intervention conditions were ¡°support of family,¡± ¡°support of surrounding people,¡± and ¡°problem solving style.¡± Actions/Interactions were ¡°mourning,¡± ¡°keeping distance,¡± ¡°seeking,¡± ¡°accepting,¡± ¡°disclosing,¡± and ¡°independence.¡± Consequences were ¡°being free,¡± ¡°strengthened by growth,¡± and ¡°unresolved problems.¡± The adaptation process consisted of ¡°the stage of suppression,¡± ¡°the stage of groping,¡± ¡°the stage of awareness,¡± and ¡°the stage of independent aim.¡± The core category was ¡°to prepare for self-initiated life after getting over confusion.¡±
Conclusions: Specific suggestions for professional therapy were provided.
