Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between conflicts with parents-in-law and marital satisfaction and to determine if mindfulness has an effect on this association.

Methods: The subjects were 192 married couples in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. The data were analyzed with the Actor-Partner Interdependent Model (APIM) and with Ping¡¯s approach to path analysis.

Results: First, while the husbands¡¯ conflict with parents-in-law had significant actor and partner effects, the effect on marital satisfaction of both the husband and the wife was not significant. Second, the husbands¡¯ marital satisfaction was more strongly affected by their own conflict with the parents-in-law than the wife¡¯s conflicts with parents-in-law; however, the wives¡¯ marital satisfaction was strongly affected by the husband¡¯s conflicts with parents-in-law. Third, both the wife¡¯s and the husband¡¯s mindfulness had no significant actor and partner effects on marital satisfaction. Fourth, the husband¡¯s mindfulness had significant moderating actor and partner effects. Fifth, higher levels of husbands¡¯ mindfulness was associated with higher levels of husbands¡¯ and wives¡¯ marital satisfaction.

Conclusions: Couples were directly influenced by the husband¡¯s conflict with parents-in-law, and couples¡¯ marital satisfaction varied in relation to the husband¡¯s mindfulness.
