People with Hearing Loss and Marital Adjustment Types: A Grounded Theory

Abstract

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to understand the experience of deaf persons in the marital adjustment process, identifying both the phenomena and the context. This was done to inductively develop a theory to help explain the martial adjustment types of deaf persons.
Method: The participants of this research were 15 deaf people who used Korean sign language, 6 of whom were married men and 9 who were married women. Strauss and Corbin’s (1996) approach to Grounded Theory was used to analyze the interview data.
Results: A total of 154 concepts emerged, 20 of which were upper category, and 53, subcategory. Through axial coding, it was determined that the couple adjustment process of deaf persons worked out “after devoting true heart and interdependence, separately and together, to enjoy happiness.” Types of marital adjustment included “couple reliance,” “resignation,” “preserving face,” and “effort of respect.”
Conclusions: This research can serve as foundational information on deaf persons’ couple adaptation for education and counselling programs.
