Narrative Identity of Highly Educated, Middle-Class, Retired Male Baby Boomers
Kim Kyung-Hee

Chung Hye-Jeong
Abstract
Objectives: This study set out to explore the narrative identity of retired male baby boomers.

Methods: Five retired male baby boomers were interviewed about their experiences in their occupations, families, self-development, and communities. The interview data were analyzed according to the narrative inquiry methods and procedures presented by Clandinin and Connelly (2007).

Results: The story of the participants¡¯ temporal dimension was composed of a column line, and the story of the participant¡¯s interaction dimension was composed of a raw line. Through the analysis, the researchers constructed a five-step scheme: Poverty, Learning, Success, Healing, and Face Saving.

Conclusions: This scheme implies a major theme for the narrative identity of baby boomer retired men, showing the overall picture of their identity and both contributing to and extending the research horizon. Implications and practical plans for educational and counseling practices are discussed, as are suggestions for follow-up research.
