Attachment and Post-Adversity Growth Among Bereaved Middle-aged Women

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study explored restorative and growth-related variables in understanding the experience of bereaved middle-aged women. The study examined two transitional events: a developmental crisis and a bereavement event.
Methods: 395 middle-aged women with bereavement experiences were investigated for the effects of attachment style, family resilience, and active stress coping strategy on post-adversity growth. Structural Equation Modeling was used to verify and to analyze the relationships among the variables.
Results: First, secure attachment and anxiety attachment had no significant direct effects on post-adversity growth. Second, secure attachment and anxiety attachment had an effect on post-adversity growth, mediated by family resilience. Third, the secure attachment of the women affected the growth after adversity through an active stress coping strategy, but anxiety attachment did not have a significant effect on the post-adversity path to growth. Fourth, secure attachment and anxiety attachment showed significant influence on post-adversity growth through the mediation of family resilience and an active stress-coping strategy.
Conclusions: Loss-oriented mourning for the women was discussed in an integrated manner, highlighting the following variables: coping with reality and growth; individual factors such as attachment; socio-cultural factors such as family resilience; and active stress-coping strategies such as cognitive factors.
