Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate research trends by reviewing articles related to couple therapy in Korean counseling journals through 2016.
Methods: A total of 186 KCI?listed research papers were selected from the scholarly search site riss.kr. The articles were classified and analyzed according to yearly trends, academic areas, research topics, therapy theories and techniques, and research methods.
Results: First, couple-therapy studies grew quantitatively by more than 20% every year, starting in 1995. Second, couple-therapy research was mainly presented in the academic fields of family therapy, psychology, and counseling. Third, couple-therapy research subjects were divided into married couples¡¯ problem situations, medical characteristics, mental factors, family-cycle related factors, and problems in special families. Fourth, the therapeutic theories and techniques used in couple-therapy studies included integrated approaches, Satir¡¯s empirical approach, Bowen' s multi?generational approach, Imago therapy, and art therapy. Fifth, research methods included both intervention studies (outcome and case studies) and non?intervention studies (empirical research and reference review studies).
Conclusions: This study presented the current status of couple-therapy research in Korea.
