Park Tai-Young
Abstract
Objectives: This study explored the cognition change process of a sexless couple during nine sessions of family therapy.
Methods: The researchers used Prochaska and Norcross's transtheoretical analysis model to analyze verbatim transcripts of nine counseling sessions.

Results: The concepts found during the ¡°pre-contemplation stage¡± included emotional divorce, the husband¡¯s emotional repression and loss of identity, and the avoidance of sexual communication. The concepts found during ¡°the contemplation stage¡± included the recognition of emotions transferred between spouses, a disrespected husband, an enmeshed relationship between the husband and his mother, and dysfunctional communication patterns transmitted from the family of origin. The concepts found during the ¡°preparation stage¡± were advice on disciplining children, attempts at dysfunctional emotional expression, and attempts at expression of opinions. The concepts found during ¡°the action stage¡± included focusing on one¡¯s own problem, a pitiable husband, attempts at new connection with the husband, the wife¡¯s ambivalent feelings about her mother-in-law, and restructuring marital intimacy through functional communication patterns. Lastly, in the ¡°maintenance stage,¡± the couple respected each other and formed a new marital life focused on the nuclear family.

Conclusions: Based on these findings, the authors suggested family therapy strategies for treating sexless couples.
