Abstract
Objectives: This study explored counseling experiences of unmarried mothers in Korea.

Methods: The researchers conducted in-depth interviews with four unmarried mothers, who each had more than 10 sessions of counseling experience. The researchers used Nvivo 11 to assist in the analysis of the data, based on Colaizzi¡¯s phenomenological research method.

Results: Nine theme clusters were derived from the study: 1) emotional control problems and low parenting confidence; 2) economic and social difficulties; 3) the relationship of the original family and trauma experiences; 4) conflicts with the father of the child; 5) positive object relationship experiences through the counselors; 6) strengthening motivation for change; 7) deconstruction of ¡°normal family discourse¡± and acquiring a parental identity; 8) the mother¡¯s changing efforts and practices; and 9) efforts and practices undertaken to change family relationships.

Conclusions: The results of this study were discussed within the framework of family therapy theories. Also, an effective counseling alternative was presented.
