Wives’ Attachment Injury from Spousal Infidelity: A Narrative Inquiry

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study was conducted to explore the life experiences and meanings for wives who have experienced attachment injury due to spousal infidelity. The participants included three wives who had experienced spousal infidelity and were currently maintaining a stable marriage relationship with the cheating spouse.
Methods: Data were collected through in-depth interviews between May and August, 2018. Three to five interviews were conducted with each participant. Data analysis, conducted with methods derived from Clandinin and Connelly, included present on the site, moving to field text, site text composition, experience meaning composition, and research text composition.
Results: The meaning of the participants’ life experiences were organized into different periods: “The shocking period: The earth is shaking”; “The storm period: Becoming a stranger”; “The iceberg period: Going on a journey of life alone and not together”; “The transition period: Meeting a moment of understanding and recovery”; and “Freedom: Making life satisfying.”
Conclusions: The results of this study will provide a deeper understanding of the lives of wives who have experienced spousal infidelity, which can be used as a resource for offering more efficient couple counseling.
