The Loss of a Father and the Experience of Delayd Mourning for a Female Counselor: A Collaborative Autoethnography

Abstract
Objectives: This study explored the experience of a researcher who grew up in the absence of her father and later discovered that mourning had been delayed.

Methods: For the purpose of this autoethnographic study, the researcher gathered materials such as self-recall data, a self-analysis journal, a diary, and various conversations.

Results: The researcher found experiences of disconnection from the father and repression of memories. Through conducting the autoethnography, the researcher discovered that she had experienced delayed mourning. She began to take care of herself by restoring the relationship with her father through encountering him and through the beginning of mourning.

Conclusions: The researcher discussed implications for understanding and counseling those who have experienced the loss of their father.
