Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the family values of family therapists and to identify differences between these and the values of the general population.
Methods: Questionnaire data were collected from 186 members of the Korean Association of Family Therapy and from the women family panel of the Korea Women's Policy Institute. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0.
Results: KAFT members have more nontraditional values related to marriage and children, family support, and sex roles than people in the general population. In addition, there were differences in family values according to gender, religion, ages, and majors.
Conclusions: Family therapists should consider taking value-neutral attitudes in order to avoid conflicts regarding family values in counseling settings. The KAFT should provide education, training, and supervision for how to do this. It is also necessary to promote public awareness of the diversity of family values.
