A Case Study on the Experiences of Job Stress and Overcoming Job Stress in Firefighters
Kim Sa-Rah

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to deeply understand the meaning of experience of job stress and experience of coping with job stress among firefighters.

Methods: For the purpose of this study, it was investigated in depth how the experiences of various job stresses experienced by firefighters working in the field were revealed in their lives, and the meaning and process of overcoming job stress were deeply illuminated.

Results: Using the case study of Stake (1995), three categories, ten subcategories, and 27 semantic units were driven from in-depth interviews with six research participants. The three categories are ¡®fatal things as a firefighter¡¯, ¡®pride in one¡¯s job as a firefighter¡¯, and ¡®family supports during hard times¡¯. The results of the study are as follows. First, firefighters witness suicide, death and injury of colleagues and experience death and injury at the site of the exodus. Firefighters experience various types of job stress and are exposed to many traumatic events, but they accept these as part of the job. Second, relating to pride and responsibility, rewarding, and social recognition from others positively affects overcoming job stress. Third, social support from family members, such as a child¡¯s being proud of their father's work or a spouse¡¯s understanding of the firefighter¡¯s job characteristics, minimizes the stressors and supports acceptance of stressful conditions.

Conclusions: This study is meant to have an in-depth look at the job stress experience among firefighters. In addition, it contributes to understanding the process of overcoming job stress using a family based approach, rather than focusing on segregated personal factors that cause stress.
