A Narrative Inquiry into the Bereavement Experiences of Wives in the Honeymoon Stage
Ryu Jin-Sook

Seo Mi-A
Abstract
Objectives: Death of a spouse has been known to be one of the most stressful experiences in life. Depending on the stage of life in which people experience the death of their spouse, the content of their bereavement experiences and adaptational tasks may be largely different. The purpose of this study was to explore what kind of the experiences the newlywed wives report about their spouse¡¯s death and what kinds of meanings they give to their bereavement experiences.

Methods: Narrative data were collected from five to seven interviews with five female participants who experienced spousal bereavement in the honeymoon stage, that is, within five years of marriage. In order to interpret the bereavement experiences and meanings identified by the newlywed widows, we extracted key themes from the participants¡¯ interviews in an inductive and phenomenological way suggested by Smith(1995, Smith & Osborn, 2008).

Results: The experiences and meanings of wives who have been bereaved in the honeymoon stage are summarized as follows: (1) Losing the sanctuary and safety base (2) Becoming a one-wing, broken, pathetic bird, (3) Expanding the horizons of relationships, (4) Only child becoming the meaning for living, (5) The fog is gradually lifted, (6) Standing alone.
Conclusions: This study may be the first study in Korea that explores the wife¡¯s experience of bereavement among newlyweds, and it can be a basis for understanding and further study on the experience of bereavement in newlyweds, as well as on the adaptation process. Furthermore, this study may be useful for counseling and interventions to alleviate the sadness and pain of women who have experienced bereavement in the honeymoon stage.
