Effects of a Group Program Consisting of PREPARPE/ENRICH and Positive Psychotherapy on Relationship Enhancement of Premarital Couples

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives: The present study aims to design and assess a group program comprising PREPARE/ENRICH and positive psychotherapy for the enhancement of relationships of premarital couples, so as to propose an effective intervention for premarital couples.
Methods: The couples were divided into the intervention group and the control group (n=10 each). The intervention group underwent an 8-session group counseling program consisting of PREPARE/ENRICH and positive psychotherapy for 90 minutes per session.
Results: The group PREPARE/ENRICH and positive psychotherapy program improved premarital couples’ dating relationship satisfaction. In contrast to the control group, the intervention group showed a significant change in dating relationship satisfaction after participating in the intervention. Second, the group PREPARE/ENRICH and positive psychotherapy program improved premarital couples’ couple intimacy. In contrast to the control group, the intervention group showed a significant change in couple intimacy after participating in the intervention. Third, premarital couples who participated in the group PREPARE/ENRICH and positive psychotherapy program demonstrated “personal internal changes,” “changes in the relationship,” and “some negative experiences.”
Conclusions: the present study demonstrated the synergic effects of combining these two programs in terms of preventive counseling. Furthermore, this study presented implications for understanding and approaching premarital couples, who fall under stage 1 of the family life cycle, thereby mounting more fundamental data regarding family counseling for premarital couples.
