Abstract
Objectives: This study aims to compare the outcome and client experience of couples counseling for newly married couples utilizing PREPARE/ENRICH-CV(P/E) with integrative couple counseling.

Methods: The participants were 12 newly (5 years or less) wed couples with no children, living in and around Seoul, South Korea. They were randomly assigned to two groups, followed by four sessions of P/E counseling or integrative couple counseling each. Pre-post and follow-up (6 weeks after) tests of marital satisfaction and dysfunctional communication were compared. Also, clients¡¯ experiences were analyzed qualitatively using the session evaluations and interview with clients at the post and follow-up sessions.

Results: While marriage satisfaction was significantly improved in both groups, the decrease in dysfunctional communication was relatively apparent in the P/E counseling group. However, the differences of the groups were not significant, which means both models show similar change. The qualitative data showed each model¡¯s strengths in achieving the couples¡¯ practical change as well as insights into their issues.

Conclusions: The results of this study can be used to establish an efficient preventive short-term counseling model for newly married couples.
