Abstract

We investigated the cause of frequent pigtail catheter rupture in vivo. Experiments focus on the burst of catheters due to external pressure. The Dowson-Mueller Drainage Catheter 8.5 Fr from Cook Medical was used as an experimental tool. First, the tip of the pigtail catheter was completely closed and the pressure was applied using an in-deflator. As a result, ballooning and bursting occurred at average 17.2¡¾1.03 atm in 22¡É. and occurred at average 13.0¡¾0.47 atm in 37¡É distilled water. This was the same shape that occurred in the patient¡¯s. Based on these results and by conducting additional surveys, 27% of the managers were unaware of the risk of burst. Therefore, if specific guidelines and education are given to patients and administrators, the burst of the catheter will be prevented.
