Abstract
PURPOSE :¡¡To study morphological and suspensible characteristics of Polyvinyl alcohol in relation to contrast?saline mixture at various ratios.

METHODS : PVA particles from two vendors (Cook Medical, Boston Scientific) were examined. 1) Material movement (0.5mm) time was measured in suspension of contrast and saline at different ratios and 2) comparisons of integration time of suspension were evaluated. In order to minimize the errors caused by measurement deviation, three experimenters measured particles¡¯ movement time by same conditions for 9 times.

RESULT :¡¡1) The experiment of movement time proved the mixture of 8:2 ratio which is contrast 8cc, saline 2cc showed the slowest time record among the 11 experimental groups except 3 groups (Cook"s 90-180¥ì m, 710-1000¥ìm and Boston"s 710-1000¥ìm). Below 250¥ìm particles remained constant for 26~38 seconds on average at 5:5 ratio. On the other hand, when particle sizes exceeded 500¥ìm, movement time fell down within 8 seconds on average. 2) Integration time of PVA suspension showed 2.3~13.1 seconds differences between 10 seconds and 10 minutes by sizes.

CONCLUSIONS :¡¡To achieve safe and continuous injection of embolic materials, 8:2 or 7:3 contrast/saline mixture is recommended and give 10minutes or more for being fully aggregated.
