Factors Associated with Propensity to Aggression in Korean Adolescents Enrolled in a Middle School

Abstract

|
Background: Violence in adolescent period, given its impact on psychological and physical health, is not only a social issue but also a significant public health problem. Violence has been suggested to have close relationship with aggressive
propensity. This study aimed to evaluate factors related with aggressive propensity in Korean adolescents.
Methods: A total of 543 adolescents enrolled in a middle school were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire measuring propensity to aggression (Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, Korean version), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), stress (Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument, Korean version), sociodemographic characteristics, and
health habits. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were conducted.
Results: Quality of sleep was not associated with propensity to aggression. Sex, academic performance, smoking, alcohol, coffee, and time to play electronic game were significantly associated with propensity to aggression in univariate analysis. However, the associations did not persist in multivariate analysis. Stress was uniquely associated with propensity to aggression in both univariate and multivariate analysis. Compared with the lowest stress group, odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of having propensity to aggression were 1.03 (0.41 to 2.56) and 4.64 (2.04 to 10.54), respectively, for moderate stress group and the highest stress group.
Conclusion: In this study, stress was the factor that has a strong independent association with propensity to aggression, which suggests that adequate stress management of adolescents may contribute to reduce propensity to aggression.
