Frailty can be defined as age-related physiologic vulnerability. Because frail elderly are believed as a high risk group to become disabled and institutionalized within several months or years, a lot of studies were performed in various research fi eld in these days. But currently there is no wide accepted defi nition or clear criteria for frailty in Korea. So many researchers have been in trouble to use the definition of frailty, and some researchers made their own criteria without considering of reasonable conceptualization. This review summarizes recent literatures on the conceptual definition and operationalization to frailty. Four criteria to defi ne frailty from different studies are shown in this article, which have different evidences and unique characteristics.
