For the successful treatment of depression, it is essential to use non-pharmacological treatment in addition to antidepressant pharmacotherapy. The concept of non-pharmacological treatments encompasses all types of psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and even self-help treatments. In primary practice, it is hard to employ various techniques of non-pharmacological therapy due to limitations on time and cost. However, primary care physicians should aware of the basic concept of psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and self care with proven effi cacy to help their patients. In terms of self care, the effi cacy of exercise has been proven by many studies and thus is recommendable to patients. This review summarizes the principles of various non-pharmacological therapies for depression and provides practical information for implementing them in primary care.
