Abstract
Travel medicine is a relatively new fi eld that was developed in response to growing numbers of travelers. The principle aim of travel medicine is to prevent and manage health problems in travelers. Travel medicine provides health information related to travel, immunization, illness avoidance, and chemoprophylaxis. Travelers often experience travel-related illness. The most common problem is traveler¡¯s diarrhea. This can be reduced by eating and drinking only freshly, well prepared food and water. Loperamide and ofl oxacin therapy can also give relief from traveler¡¯s diarrhea. Routine immunizations such as diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, measles-mumps-rubella, and polio should be administered. Typhoid, hepatitis A, and rabies vaccination should be considered for travelers going to developing countries. Anti-malarial medication is recommended for those traveling to South East Asia. Pre-travel evaluation and medical advice for travelers should include examination of underlying medical conditions, current medications, and vaccination status. Health risks while traveling include development of illness while in transit, exposure to infections of endemic areas, and environmental exposure such as high altitude and wilderness places. Travelers with chronic disease such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or ischemic heart disease, etc., require comprehensive medical advice and care. Medical advice for travelers should be individualized and based on the current expert recommendations.
