Family Medicine Board Certifi cation Examination in Korea
Park Hoon-Ki

Abstract
The Korean Family Medicine Board Certification Examination played a major role in establishing accountability for producing good primary care physicians in Korea for three decades. The examination consists of two phases: the fi rst phase written test (250 multiple choice questions), and second phase practice exam (50 slide-triggered questions and two stations for clinical practice examination). The clinical practice examination (CPX) was introduced in 2009, and it will be extended into the whole part of the 2nd phase of the test in 2014. Pass/fail will be decided only by the CPX total scores. The reliability of the written test was very high, above 0.95, and that of the CPX was 0.74. The whole CPX will need a new standard setting method, strategies for management of standardized patients, and increase in the cost related with logistics, strategies for recruitment, and training of standardized patients, and increase in cost related to logistics. The written knowledge test needs to be changed into a computer-based test to reduce document work and information sharing among examinees. Psychometrical supports are planned for a successful launch of the whole CPX in 2014.
