Abstract
The kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, are generally asymptomatic until there is significant decline of kidney function. Therefore, an early detection of kidney disease is very important. A dipstick test is very easy and simple urinalysis method, and is useful in offering information about hematuria and proteinuria, which are common conditions of kidney disease. For accurate interpretations of urinalysis, midstream urine samples must be collected and be analyzed promptly. The important information about metabolic disorders and decreased kidney function can be obtained from the color, odor, volume, specifi c gravity, and pH of urine samples. Especially, the presence of red blood cell, white blood cell, and protein in urine sample are the signs of signifi cant diseases, like urinary stone, genitourinary cancer, urinary tract infection, diabetic nephropathy, and glomerular diseases. Then, three consecutive urinalysis and further evaluations are needed in such conditions. Primary care physicians should prevent chronic kidney disease by the thorough understanding of urinalysis and follow-up the positive patients in urinalysis.
