Abstract

Most autoimmune diseases are not common in primary care. Therefore, primary care physicians¡¯ understanding of the laboratory tests related to this disease may not be comprehensive enough. However, the prevalence of these diseases (including rheumatioid arthritis) is steadily rising and these kinds of tests are included in regular health check-up programs. Thus, primary care physicians are increasingly required to understand these tests. In this regard, this article reviews these tests, such as tests measuring erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, rheumatoid factor, anticitrullinated peptide antibody, antinuclear antibody, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody, antiphospholipid antibody, anti-saccharomyces cerevisiae antibody, and human leukocyte antigen. Knowing about the applications, interpretations, and limitations of these tests will be helpful for primary care physicians including family medicine doctors when they treat
or give advice to patients.
