Strategies for the Advancement of Family Medicine in Korea
Kim Cheol-Hwan

Abstract
Primary care is essential among the strategies for extending healthy life expectancy and quality of life. The key policy priority for improving the quality of care in Korea should be the development of a strong primary care sector. Strategies for improvement of primary care in Korea are certainly needed because the current primary care system is considered inappropriate and ineffi cient from many perspectives. Family medicine has a key role in primary care. In order to advance family medicine, primary care should be a top priority in the health policy of the new 2013 government. In order to improve primary care in Korea, several steps must be taken, including: making new positions in the ministry of health and welfare for primary care, increasing the number of residents of family medicine, reestablishment of the health care service system, reimbursement of services for health promotion and disease prevention, increase of doctors¡¯ fee, increased incentive for comprehensive services for the elderly, and an incentive system for high quality. It is hoped that the new 2013 government will develop a long-term health care vision and make ongoing investments to improve primary care in Korea.
