Abstract

Acute upper airway infection includes acute nasopharyngitis (common cold), acute sinusitis, acute pharyngitis, and acute epiglottitis. It can also be referred to as acute nasopharyngitis in the narrower sense. Cough and sputum are the common symptoms of these diseases. Specific treatments are needed for these symptoms according to their underlying causes. However, empirical therapies using drugs such as antitussives, expectorants, and mucolytics are applied to symptomatic relief in certain situations. The effects of these drugs are not clearly demonstrated and do not last long. The aim of this review is to examine the list, mechanism, clinical characteristics, and directions for the use of these drugs currently available for the common cold.
