Abstract
By the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guideline, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by persistent airfl ow limitation that is usually progressive and associated with an enhanced chronic infl ammatory response to noxious particles or gases in the airways and the lung. Because the forced expiratory volume in one second is an unreliable marker of the severity of breathlessness, exercise limitation, and health status impairment, the GOLD revision report in 2011 replaced the term ¡°Stage¡± with ¡°Grade.¡± Therefore management of stable COPD based on a strategy considering both disease impact (determined mainly by symptom burden and activity limitation) and future risk of exacerbation is recommendation.
