Background: Most men of national merit are getting older and many of them have chronic disease or functional disability. However, there are few data about the cause of death for men of national merit. This study aimed to analyze the cause of death of national meritorious men in the past 5 years (57 months).
Methods: All subjects were national meritorious males whose death certifi cates were issued at a veterans hospital in Seoul from April 2006 to December 2010. The total number of subjects were 1,351 patients. We classifi ed the cause of death into several groups by Korean Standard Classifi cation of Diseases (6th version) and analyzed the residential area. The results were compared with published data by Statistics Korea (annual report on the cause of death statistics, 2010).
Results: The study comprised 1,351 patients. The average age of death was 69.2 years old. The most common cause of death was malignancy (59.5%), followed by respiratory disease (14.9%) including pneumonia (12.7%), cardiovascular disease (9.9%), and cerebrovascular disease (4.2%). The three major malignant causes of death were lung cancer, liver cancer, and stomach cancer.
Conclusion: Over the study period, the first and second cause of death in men of national merit were malignancy and respiratory disease, respectively. However, death by cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease was signifi cantly lower than in the general population, while death by pneumonia was markedly high.
