Abstract
Family medicine is in the process of reforming residency training programs with the new residency 4 training program. The need for public health care is increasing now in Korea, but the supply of doctors is lacking. The Korean Academy of Family Medicine (KAFM) has been working to set the majority of increased 1-year training period to community medicine training, with understanding not only diseases of community, but also social problems. But if there is no concrete program or sufficient feedback for community medicine training, it will result in decreased quality of family medicine training. Therefore, KAFM must work to create a more concrete residency program for community medicine, based on successful models of community medicine training programs (for example, Taiwan), while also making them suitable for Korean medical environments. Also, the preceptor education for primary care physicians who work in ambulatory medical units or public health centers must be preceded by community medicine training. Then we can hope to achieve the true purpose of family medicine training.
