Background: Frequency, distribution, and prevalence ratio of hypertension has increased. However, there is no laboratory test to detect hidden potentials of hypertensive state. Adiponectin is produced and secreted exclusively by adipose tissue, and plays a roll in metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis disease, and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between serum adiponectin concentrations and blood pressure.
Methods: From January 2006 to December 2007, 9,992 healthy Koreans were divided according to tertiles of blood pressure status (normotension, prehypertension, and hypertension), using the levels of blood pressure as a reference. Adiponectin, age, height, weight, waist circumference, body mass index, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and insulin were measured. Multiple logistic regression models were used to assess the association between adiponectin and the level of hypertensive state.
Results: The mean adiponectin concentrations were 7.9 microg/mL, 6.8 microg/mL, and 7.3 microg/mL in normotension group, prehypertensive group, and hypertensive group, respectively. Levels of adiponectin were inversely correlated with systolic blood pressure (r=-0.053, P<0.01) and diastolic blood pressure (r=-0.063, P<0.01). However, multivariate logistic regression analysis did not show adiponectin levels were independently associated with prehypertension (odds ratios OR], 0.97; 95% confi dence interval [CI], 0.99 to 1.05) and hypertension (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.89 to 1.09), respectively.
Conclusion: Our fi nding had shown that low adiponectin levels are associated with prehypertension and hypertension.
