Background: Thyroid nodules are very common and their clinical importance is based on the fact that some nodules (5?10%) are forms of thyroid cancer.
Methods: Prevalence of thyroid nodules was examined through thyroid ultrasonography conducted by radiologists targeting 627 people (male, 396 people; female, 231 people) over the age of 20 who visited an Incheon health care center from January 1, 2011 to December 21, 2011. Nine people were examined by fi ne-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).
Results: Thyroid nodules were observed in 53.1% (333/627) of subjects, 48.0% (190/396) of males, and 61.9% (143/231) of females. Thyroid nodules in females were measured 2.351 times more frequently than that of males. Prevalence of thyroid nodules increased with age. One year of age increased the prevalence of thyroid nodules 1.034 times (P-value<0.001).
Thyroid cancers were observed in 0.6% (2/333) of subjects. Among 83 subjects who had thyroid nodules, subclinical hypothyroidism was observed in 12.0% and subclinical hyperthyroidism were observed in 2.4%.
Conclusion: Thyroid ultrasonography is useful to evaluate thyroid nodules and perform FNAC to detect thyroid cancer.
