Background: Recently, there has been a rising interest in hospice therapy for terminal cancer patients for improving their quality of life, and managing their pain and symptoms. The aim of this study is to verify the correlation between the timing of the hospice consultation and the duration of life of the patients.
Methods: We investigated 155 patients¡¯ medical records retrospectively who had died from January 2011 to December 2011 after they had been treated at the hospice center in the Catholic Medical Center. We investigated the last date of chemotherapy, the admission date at the hospice center, and the date of death of the patients. With these dates, we calculated the period between the date of quitting chemotherapy and the admission date at the hospice center, and between the fi rst day of hospice care and the date of death.
Results: The median duration of life of group 1 (less than 15 days between the date of quitting chemotherapy and the admission date at the hospice center), 26 months, was longer than that of group 2 (more than 15 days between the date of quitting chemotherapy and the admission date at the hospice center), which was 10 months (P=0.035).
Conclusion: This study showed that rapid admission to hospice care had a positive impact on the duration of life of terminal cancer patients.
