Health has become an important issue among Korean laypersons, however, local primary care systems are not settled yet. For the last decade, studies investigating the policy directions of primary health care have been produced. However, these studies have rarely included the opinions of health care users. Therefore, this study focuses on their perceptions towards the role of primary health care. Twenty people were interviewed for the purposes of this study. Interviewees reported a desire for primary health care to have a human and social environment-centered perspective on health issues as well as psycho-somatic counseling beyond physical health promotion. Furthermore, comprehensive health management based on a family-like doctor-patient relationship was also desired. In addition, interviewees reported a need of geographically close health care clinics, inexpensive medical fees and short waiting time for medical consultations. Therefore, family medicine administrators should consider these needs when attempting to settle primary health care system issues within Korean society.
