Background: The health-care of cancer survivors is becoming an increasingly important issue. For the continuous and comprehensive care of cancer patients, the involvement of primary physicians is essential. We aimed to investigate the confi dence in primary care physicians (PCPs) based on the experiences of Korean oncologists in cancer survivor care.
Methods: Questionnaires were mailed to oncologists registered in their related specialty academic societies and collected from October to December, 2010. Out of the total 208 respondents, 18 physicians who were working in primary care units were excluded.
Results: The oncologists¡¯ confi dence in PCPs was generally low. Among the respondents, 34.2% agreed that PCPs need to participate in caring for cancer survivors as soon as possible from the time of diagnosis. The agreement was not ssociated with oncologists¡¯ characteristics such as gender, age, specialties, and working hospital level. In addition, oncologists¡¯ confi dence was not signifi cantly high in primary care physicians¡¯ role as the main medical providers for cancer survivors who completed active treatment for cancer within 5 years. For the health management of survivors who had completed active treatment 5 or more years ago, up to 88% of the oncologists had concern about overlapping treatment with PCPs. Oncologists who had concern about an overlapping role with PCPs agreed to the early involvement of PCPs in caring for cancer survivors 3.46 times more than those who did not have concern.
Conclusion: A variety of efforts need to be made to increase oncologists¡¯ confi dence in PCPs for care of cancer survivors.
