Abstract
Background: Metabolic syndrome has been shown to increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The relationship between diabetes family history and prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is well known. Our aim in this study was to investigate the association between fasting plasma glucose levels, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes family history in normoglycemic adults.

Methods: We examinated laboratory measurements of adults with no personal history of diabetes and normal fasting glucose. We assessed the association between metabolic syndrome and diabetes family history with increasing glycemia in normoglycemic adults.

Results: Normal fasting plasma glucose levels showed a positive trend with hypertriglycemia (P<0.030). Other components of metabolic syndrome and diabetes family history were of no signifi cance.

Conclusion: Higher fasting plasma glucose levels within the normoglycemic range may constitute a risk of metabolic syndrome in normoglycemic adults.
