Suicide is a major health problem worldwide, but it is a decreasing trend in recent years. However, Korea¡¯s suicide rate has recently increased continuously. In 2010, South Korea¡¯s suicide rate ranks first among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, there is still a serious health problem in Korea. Despite these serious suicide problem, primary health care in South Korea and have not been able to respond effectively to suicide prevention. Primary care physicians often meet people at risk of suicide and those who complain of physical symptoms before suicide in office. Suicide prevention by primary healthcare education programs to lower the suicide rate has been reported overseas. Primary care physicians in Korea in surveys showed a need for suicide prevention training. In the study of primary care users, it showed that many of people at risk of suicide are using primary care. But in Korea, the cure rate of depression is very low because the role of primary care in the treatment of depression is low. And suicide prevention through primary care training is not going well. In mental health in Korea: OECD review and recommendation 2013, there is a lack of appropriate community resources for the treatment of mild-to-moderate mental illnesses. Expanding access to diagnosis and treatment of mild to moderate mental disorders in primary care, and looking to improve mental wellbeing across the Korean population. To reduce the high suicide rate in Korea, primary care depression treatment and suicide prevention guidelines should make. And for this effort through education of primary care and health system change is necessary.
