Abstract

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of risk factors including abdominal obesity, high fasting glucose,
triglycerides, hypertension, and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular
disease. This study examined the association of MS and bone mineral density (BMD) in 2,716 premenopausal and 760
postmenopausal women.
Methods: We used multiple linear regression and multiple logistic regression analysis to examine the cross-sectional
associations of MS defi ned by modifi ed National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria with
BMD. During the period of September, 2009 to December, 2010 we recruited 3,476 women who were participated in a
health examination in Daegu Catholic University Hospital.
Results: The prevalence of MS was 4.8% in premenopausal and 25.3% in postmenopausal women. After adjusted
covariates (age, body weight, body mass index, body fat %, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, glycated
hemoglobin, gamma-glutamyltransferase, total-protein, smoking, drinking, and regular exercise), MS had lower BMD at
lumbar-spine and femur neck in premenopausal women, but not in postmenopausal women.
Conclusion: The prevalence of low BMD at lumbar-spine and femur neck were higher in premenopausal women with MS.
MS maybe independent risk factor for osteoporosis.
