Abstract
Background: As South Korea enters aging society, the prevalence of osteoporosis and incidence of fracture is increasing. Consequently, treatment, early diagnosis and prevention of osteoporosis are becoming key issues in the health fi eld. In this study, we evaluated the correlation between serum albumin which represents nutritional status and the bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine and femoral neck.

Methods: Among 1,061 men who received health screening in the healthcare center of Cheil General Hospital, 541 men who had bone mineral density exam (except 494 men who took drugs that affect bone metabolism, osteoporosis medication or who had illnesses affecting bone metabolism) and who were above 30 years old were chosen. We performed Pearson correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and analysis of variance to find out the relationship between BMD and age, body mass index, total protein, serum albumin, hemoglobin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Results: After multiple regression analysis adjusted by age and BMI, there was a signifi cant correlation between BMD of the lumbar spine, serum albumin, and hemoglobin as independent variables. Serum albumin was signifi cantly correlated with the bone mineral density of the femoral neck as independent variable. Serum albumin level was significantly increased as increasing BMD of L-spine, femoral neck.

Conclusion: Serum albumin and BMD were positively correlated. To help prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, health offi cials can encourage patients to check BMD, recommend protein intake, and educate about the risk factors for osteoporosis when hypoalbuminemia or low albumin levels are found, even if within normal range by screening.
