Abstract
Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is a mucocutaneous disease caused by the immunological effects of a tumor on the resident immune system rather than by direct tumor infi ltration or tissue damage caused by metastasis. It is characterised by a polymorphic skin eruption associated with severe mucosal involvement. The routine histology is typically that of pemphigus, with additional features of dyskeratotic keratinocytes and vacuolar degeneration of the basal layer. Pulmonary involvement as bronchiolitis obliterans is frequent, mostly irreversible and often fatal. The disease occurs worldwide and about 450 cases have been reported in the literature between 1990 and 2011. The incidence rate of the disease is low, but family medicine doctor who work in palliative center or hospice for cancer patients need to be aware of the disease. Therefore, we report a case of a woman with thyroid cancer whose clinical and immunopathological features are onsistent with a diagnosis of PNP.
