Abstract

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is thought to be increasing in South Korea as it is in western countries. The dominant pathophysiology of GERD includes malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter and anatomical dysfunction such as hiatal hernia. Diagnosis of GERD can be based upon clinical symptoms alone, but upper gastrointestinal fi berscopy is needed to find combined disease in South Korea. Treatment with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is preferred and maintenance therapy with PPI could be performed for recurrent symptomatic patients. Indications for surgery in atients with GERD are medical treatment failure, while other indications are controversial in South Korea. Careful pproaches are required in patients with Barrett¡¯s esophagus and extraesophageal symptoms.
