Abstract
Recently there has been increasing concern for public health, and in turn, increasing studies related to esophagogastroduodenoscopy and upper gastrointestinal barium. Peptic ulcer disease has been actively reported in health checkups. Thus, in order to counsel and manage patients with this disorder, family physicians need to know the defi nition, cause, mechanism, prevalence, symptoms, and treatments including the eradication of Helicobacter pylori and accurate use of antisecretory agents such as proton pump inhibitors and histamine 2-receptor blockers. In addition, at present, the use of non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs or antithrombotic drugs (e.g., aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, etc.) has increased as aging has increased. Therefore, family physicians need to know guidelines regarding peptic ulcer disease. Additionally, physicians should focus on not only treatment, but also prevention.
