Abstract
Background: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing in South Korea. Previous studies showed that the incidence of cardiovascular disease is higher among metabolic syndrome patients. It has been suggested that oxidative stress is related with the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis as an infl ammatory reaction.

Methods: We researched the associations between oxidative stress and the risk of cardiovascular disease, characterized by the presence of atheroma during carotid sonography in metabolic syndrome patients (109 cases). Oxidative stress was expressed as the summation of each oxidative balance score, assigned by the status of smoking and the degree of alcohol consumption, as well as by nutrient consumption. Each oxidative balance score was calculated by the quintile distribution from zero to four. The raw data was obtained through individual survey and interview.

Results: The total oxidative balance score was not different statistically between the two groups classifi ed by the presence or absence of atheroma during carotid sonography, with a score of 15.88 and 15.44, respectively (P=0.40). Also each component of oxidative stress in this study was not associated with the presence of atheroma on the carotid artery.

Conclusion: This study does not support an association between oxidative stress and risk of cardiovascular disease assessed by the presence of atheroma during carotid sonography.
