Abstract
Background: Uterine fibroid is the most common benign tumor in women of reproductive age and its mechanism of development remains unclear. The relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) and uterine fibroids has been investigated recently but the results were confl icting. Therefore, we investigated the association between MS and uterine
fi broids in premenopausal Korean women.

Methods: This case-control study included 757 women from 20 to 49 years of age who had visited a Health Promotion Center of Gachon University Gil Hospital in Incheon. The presence of fi broids was evaluated by ultrasonography. Subjects were divided into two groups: those with and those without fi broids. The comparison of metabolic features between the two groups was conducted. The MS components were assessed according to the Asian criteria of the modifi ed National Cholesterol Educational Program-Adult Treatment Panel III.

Results: Subjects with fibroids were more obese, and had higher blood pressure and triglycerides levels than subjects without fi broids. Among fi ve metabolic components, obesity (odds ratio [OR], 1.99; P<0.001) and hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 1.65; P=0.039) were signifi cantly higher in the case group compared with the control group. After adjusting for age, the signifi cance of association between obesity and fi broids remained robust (adjusted OR, 1.48; P=0.039).

Conclusion: In premenopausal Korean women, obesity was associated with uterine fi broids.
