Abstract
Background: Reports of previous studies exist on the necessity and status of gastroscopy training of residents in family medicine. This study investigated the relationship between the number of gastroscopies performed by residents and the confi dence in performing gastroscopy immediately after acquiring a medical specialist certifi cate in family medicine.

Methods: Among 377 candidates registered with the Korean Academy of Family Medicine for residency training in family medicine for February 2012, those who attended the orientation for the medical specialist certifying examination on November 5, 2011, a part of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine Autumn Academic Conference Program for 2011, were given a questionnaire. One hundred and fi fty copies of the questionnaire were placed on the desks of the attendants prior to their entrance into the orientation room, and 79 (52.6%) responded to the questionnaire.

Results: Respondents who had performed at least 50 gastroscopies reported signifi cantly higher confi dence in performing gastroscopy immediately after acquiring a medical specialist certifi cate. The odds ratio was 6.49 (95% confi dence interval, 1.27 to 33.08) with correction for confound variables including age, sex, hospital size, endoscopy training periods, and endoscopy training department.

Conclusion: Having more experience performing gastroscopy was found to be an importance factor in the confi dence level in performing gastroscopy immediately after acquiring a medical specialist certifi cate. It is necessary for each hospital to provide residents in family medicine with suffi cient experience performing gastroscopy during residency.
