Abstract
Background: Back pain is a common condition in the general population which often originates from ligament and tendon laxity. Prolotherapy is an effective treatment for back pain. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of
prolotherapy in relieving back pain.

Methods: Thirty eight patients complaining of back pain were studied. Prolotherapy was performed with 15% dextrose solution injected into ligaments or tendons at the bone attachment site where weakness was clinically suspected with presence of tenderness or as proposed by Hackett. All patients were scheduled for therapeutic sessions every week for a total of 10 sessions. Visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument-Korean version (BEPSI-K) were measured during the 1st, 6th, 10th, and 24th week.

Results: Among 38 patients studied, the prolotherapy was effective in 29 patients (76.3%) and ineffective in 9 patients (23.7%) by VAS, and effective in 22 patients (57.9%) and ineffective in 16 patients (42.1%) by ODI. The mean differences between VAS, ODI, and BEPSI-K at the 24th week of therapy were 3.29¡¾1.96, 11.26¡¾11.63, 0.69¡¾0.76 lower compared to the 1st week. All changes in VAS, ODI, BEPSI-K from the 1st to 24th week were all statistically signifi cant.

Conclusion: Prolotherapy is another effective method for treating chronic back pain that has responded poorly to onventional treatments like trigger point injection, nerve block, or medication.
