Abstract
Background: As one of the prevalent diseases in Korea, diabetes mellitus (DM) lowers individual quality of life (QOL). Self-care behaviors were recommended for improving status and preventing accompanied disease. This study aimed to determine the association between self-care behaviors and QOL among DM patients.

Methods: Outpatients with DM were recruited at Ewha Womans University Hospital in 2009. QOL was evaluated by short form health survey and scored with a physical component summary (PCS-12) and mental component summary (MCS-12) for 183 patients. Self-care behaviors were measured by the summary of diabetes self-care activity measure. The relationship between self-care behaviors and QOL was analyzed by Spearman correlation and multinomial logistic regression after adjusting for confounding factors.

Results: The higher household income, higher education level, shorter diabetes duration, and working status were associated with better physical QOL and abstinence from drinking, and shorter diabetes duration was associated with better mental QOL. Middle (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.2) and high tertile groups (aOR, 5.8) of exercise care were more likely to be in the high tertile group of PCS-12. Middle (aOR, 4.3) and high tertile groups (aOR, 4.9) of diet care were more likely to be in the high tertile group of MCS-12.

Conclusion: The results suggest that self-care behavior of DM patients may improve quality of life.
