Background: Mental health problems in adolescence have received greater focus recently as health professionals increase their efforts to prevent adult mental health problems at the early stages. Adolescent mental health is becoming increasingly important not only as a personal health problem but also a problem faced by society as a whole. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adolescent mental health state and analyze the factors associated with poor mental ealth in adolescents.
Methods: The data used in this study were obtained from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey of middle and high school students in 2009. A total of 75,066 students were enrolled in this national wide survey. Mental health was assessed using a questionnaire about depression, stress, and suicidal ideation. Age, sex, socioeconomic status, and health behaviors such as smoking, alcohol, sexual history, and regular exercise were measured. Logistic regression analysis was employed for evaluating the association between the factors and poor mental health.
Results: Smoking, drinking alcohol, being sexually active, skipping breakfast, and sleep problems were associated with mental health problems such as depression, suicidal ideation, and stress. Physical activity also showed an association with depression and suicidal ideation, however, it was far different than expected, which might be due to study design.
Conclusion: The mental health problems of adolescents may be associated with negative health behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, and sleep problems. Further study is necessary in order to clarify whether intervention in health behaviors can infl uence mental health problems in adolescents.
