Abstract
Background: Many end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients suffer from sleep disorders during dialysis therapy. Little is known about the association between night sweats and sleep disorders in ESRD patients. We studied the link between ESRD and sleep disorders along with night sweats.

Methods: This is a case-control study of sleep disorders in patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis. A total of 85 subjects were included; 37 patients with ESRD and 48 control patients. Disease status, demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and general quality of sleep were measured using a self-reported questionnaire.

Results: The prevalence of hypertensive disease in patients with ESRD was significantly higher than in the controls. However, there was no statistical significance in the majority of sleep disorder symptoms, including night sweat, between the controls and the patients with ESRD. Headache during sleep and difficulty waking up was higher in control patients without ESRD, but showed no significant statistical difference after adjusting for confounding factors.

Conclusion: Sleep disorders in patients with ESRD showed no statistically significant differences compared to control patients who visited the primary care clinic.
