Abstract
Background: Serum homocysteine level is an independent risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease. Framingham risk score (FRS) is also used as a conventional clinical risk score to evaluate cardiovascular disease. We studied the association between serum homocysteine levels and Framingham risk score.

Methods: This study was performed with 675 adults aged from 23 to 78 years old. Medical and smoking history was assessed by a questionnaire in a health examination center. Serum concentrations of homocysteine were measured with competitive immunoassay using a direct chemiluminescent technique.

Results: Serum concentration of homocysteine was correlated with FRS (total participants: r=0.292, P<0.001; men: r=0.108, P=0.024; women: r=0.243, P<0.001). The homocysteine concentrations between the three risk groups (<10%, 10?20%, >20%) were different from each other.

Conclusion: Serum concentration of homocysteine is correlated with FRS, but the correlation coefficient was not high.
